Deciphering the infection biology of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli: role of experimental infection models

چکیده

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is a well-recognised pathotype that causes localised and systemic infections in avian species of all ages including eggs. To develop successful intervention strategies, a deep understanding of bacterial and host factors mediating crucial processes in pathogenesis is required. Such information can only be gathered through approaches that embrace infection models using the target hosts. Existing infection models for APEC include: intratracheal inoculation, intra-airsac inoculation, intravenous injection, intraperitoneal inoculation, intranasal inoculation, aerosol exposure, subcutaneous injection, intramuscular injection and intra-allantoic inoculation. Describing these models in detail, this chapter highlights salient information on how each of these infection models has contributed to our understanding of the pathogenesis, host responses and testing of control methods for APEC infections.

Extra intestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli from human and avian origin: Detection of the most common virulence-encoding genes

Pathogenic Escherichia coli strains cause a wide range of extra intestinal infections including urinary tract infection in humans and colibacillosis in poultry. They are classified into uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) and avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC) with genetic similarities and variations. Their pathogenicity is related to the virulence-encoding genes like sfa</...

Antibiotic Resistance Pattern of Different Escherichia coli Phylogenetic Groups Isolated from Human Urinary Tract Infection and Avian Colibacillosis

Background: The emergence and propagation of different phylogenetic groups of antimicrobial-resistant E. coli have become a worldwide health concern in human and veterinary medicine. Therefore, the evaluation of the phylogenetic distribution of antibiotic-resistant E. coli is important for therapeutic and economic purposes. The aims of this study were to determine phylogenetic groups and patter...

Evaluation of the timing of the Escherichia coli co-infection on pathogenecity of H9N2 avian influenza virus in broiler chickens

Bacterial co-infections can probably influence the pathogenicity of H9N2 low pathogenic avian influenza virus (AIV). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of exposure time to Escherichia coli (O:2) on the pathogenicity of H9N2 AIV in broiler chickens. Three hundred and sixty broiler chickens were randomly allocated to six equal groups. At the age of 26 days, all chicks except groups 5 and 6 w...

Breast Muscle Characteristics of Avian Pathogenic Escherichia Coli Infected Broilers Fed with Antibiotics or Probiotic

The study was conducted to evaluate the impact of feeding multistrain probiotic on breast muscle characteristics of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) infected broilers. Three hundred and thirty six Lohmann MB-202 day-old-chicks were divided to four treatment groups, including CNTRL (chicks receiving basal diet and not infected), APEC (chicks receiving basal diet and infected with APEC), ...

In vitro assessment of pathogenicity and virulence encoding gene profiles of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli strains associated with colibacillosis in chickens

Background: Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) strains have been associated with various disease conditions in avian species due to virulence attributes associated with the organism. Aims: This study was carried out to determine the in vitro pathogenic characteristics and virulence encoding genes found in E. coli strains associated with colibacillosis in chickens. Methods: Fifty-two stock...
